Rajan Amit Mehta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Smith College. He has held postdoctoral positions at IMPA (Rio de Janeiro), Washington University in Saint Louis, and Penn State. His research bridges differential geometry and mathematical physics, focusing on Lie groupoids, symplectic geometry, and higher structures.
- Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley
- B.A., University of Pennsylvania
Mehta’s work explores the interplay between symmetry and geometry in physical theories, with a focus on generalized geometries and homotopy representations. His recent publications examine Frobenius objects, 2-Segal sets, and graded geometry, often using tools like differential graded manifolds and higher category theory.
Current research trends include the classification of Frobenius objects in relational and span categories, integration of Courant algebroids, and modular classes in Lie groupoid representations. His teaching materials, such as notes on Noether’s Theorem and linear algebra videos, reflect his commitment to mathematical education.
Mehta has received institutional support from the Simons Foundation and maintains active collaborations with researchers including Ivan Contreras, Xiang Tang, and Marco Zambon. He is on sabbatical at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2021–2023).
