Raj Reddy is the Moza Bint Nasser University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. He has held roles including Robotics Institute Director (1979-1991) and School of Computer Science Dean (1991-1999). His research spans AI, robotics, speech recognition, and digital libraries.
Education: B.E. Civil Engineering (University of Madras, 1958), MTech (UNSW, 1960), PhD Computer Science (Stanford, 1966). Early career included faculty roles at Stanford (1966-1969) before joining CMU in 1969.
Research focuses on AI applications for societal benefit, including voice computing for underprivileged populations, digital democracy, and universal education initiatives. Notable projects: Hearsay speech systems, Million Book Digital Library, and RGUKT educational institutions.
Over 150+ publications in AI, robotics, and speech processing. Awards include ACM Turing Award (1994), Padma Bhushan (2001), and honorary doctorates from 15+ institutions worldwide.
