Raj Chetty holds the Bloomberg Professor of Economics and William A. Ackman Professor of Economics positions at Harvard University, where he also directs Opportunity Insights—a research organization leveraging big data to study economic opportunity and pathways for improving children's life outcomes across socioeconomic backgrounds.
Chetty earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2003 at age 23, becoming one of the youngest tenured professors in the institution's history. His academic journey reflects exceptional early achievement in economic scholarship.
His research integrates empirical analysis and economic theory to reform government policies, with seminal work on tax systems, unemployment insurance, and educational access. Current investigations focus on equality of opportunity, examining how colleges, neighborhoods, and social capital influence intergenerational mobility. He pioneered the Mobility Report Cards project mapping college impacts on economic advancement and developed the Social Capital Atlas quantifying community-level opportunity drivers, particularly class disparities and racial gaps in mobility trajectories.
Major recognitions include:
- MacArthur Fellowship ("Genius Grant") for transformative social science research
- John Bates Clark Medal awarded by the American Economic Association to the top U.S. economist under 40
As Director of Opportunity Insights, Chetty leads a multidisciplinary team producing policy-relevant insights through large-scale data analysis, including collaborations with government agencies on real-world implementation. His work frequently informs congressional testimony and national media discourse on economic inequality.
