Rainer Winkelmann is a Professor of Economics at the University of Zurich and Chairman of its Department of Economics since 2015. He has held visiting professorships at Harvard University, University of California, Los Angeles, Syracuse University, and Universität Luzern, and has served as a Senior Research Associate at IZA (Institute for the Study of Labor), Bonn.

His research focuses on microeconometrics, particularly models for discrete data and panel data, with applications in social policy analysis, including work, family, and well-being. Winkelmann has advised the German and New Zealand governments on immigration policy, trade liberalization, and income inequality. He chairs advisory boards for the DIW/SOEP Survey Committee and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, and frequently lectures at summer schools globally.
