Rainer Kurz is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University (SDSU). He retired as Manager of Gas Compressor Engineering at Solar Turbines Incorporated, where he specialized in aerodynamic, rotordynamic, and mechanical design of centrifugal gas compressors. Currently, he leads RKSBenergy LLC, focusing on energy systems and decarbonization. He earned a Dr.-Ing. from Universität der Bundeswehr in Hamburg, Germany (1991).
His research spans turbomachinery, gas turbine systems, compressor design, and hydrogen integration into energy infrastructure. Key interests include aerodynamic optimization, decarbonization strategies, and sustainable energy transitions. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and holds 3 U.S. patents.
Dr. Kurz is an ASME Fellow, recipient of the 2013 ASME Industrial Gas Turbine Award, and serves on the GMRC Board of Directors, ASME PTC 10 committee, and Turbomachinery Symposium Advisory Committee. His work addresses challenges in compressor performance, fouling mechanisms, and hydrogen-natural gas mixture transportation.
Recent research highlights include studies on CO₂ emissions reduction in industrial turbines, hydrogen pipeline infrastructure, and optimal design methods for compressor plants. His contributions bridge academic research with industrial applications in oil/gas and renewable energy sectors.
