Rainer Grießhammer

Prof. Dr. Rainer Grießhammer is an Adjunct Professor for Sustainable Products at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and Principal Investigator of Research Area D. Previously, he served as Managing Director of the Öko-Institut for over 30 years before retiring in 2019. His work focuses on sustainability assessment frameworks, system innovation, and ethical implications of materials science in the Anthropocene. He has received the German Federal Environmental Award (2010) and contributes to global sustainability initiatives through advisory roles in institutions like the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU).

Research Expertise: He specializes in prospective technology assessment (TAPAS framework), biological concepts for sustainable product design, and systemic transitions toward sustainability. His publications bridge natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences to address Anthropocene challenges.
