Ragnhild Brøvig is a Professor at the Department of Musicology and the RITMO Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Rhythm, Time, and Movement at the University of Oslo. She specializes in popular music studies, focusing on music production, hip-hop, electronic music, and the sociocultural implications of digital mediation. Her research explores remix culture, copyright issues, and rhythmic elements in music. She leads projects like the Musical Fragmentation group and MASHED: Mashup Music, Copyright, and Platform Regulation, funded by the Research Council of Norway.
Her education includes a PhD in Musicology from the University of Oslo (2013) and an MA in 2007. She has authored influential books such as Parody in the Age of Remix (2023) and Digital Signatures (2016, with Anne Danielsen). Her work bridges music technology, cultural studies, and legal frameworks surrounding creative content.
Brøvig’s research spans interdisciplinary collaborations at the RITMO Center, examining rhythm perception across cultures and disciplines. Her recent articles analyze AI in music production, platform detection policies affecting mashups, and gender dynamics in digital audio workstations (DAWs). She actively engages with emerging technologies, exploring their impact on musical creativity and cultural expression.
Her advising and grant work emphasize innovation in music production and digital rights. She collaborates on projects like the TIME initiative on musical microrhythm and contributes to global musicology discourse through edited volumes and international conferences.
