Raffaele Pisano is a full physicist and Professor at the Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille (Lille-1), affiliated with the Institut d'Électronique, de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie (IEMN) and CNRS. He also holds a Research Associate position at the University of Lorraine. His academic journey includes a PhD from La Sapienza University of Rome and an HDR (Habilitation) in the History of Science from the University of Lorraine.
His research primarily focuses on the history and epistemology of physics and mathematics, particularly the works of historical figures like Sadi Carnot, Galileo, Newton, and Tartaglia. He explores themes such as thermodynamics, mechanics, and the philosophical underpinnings of scientific theories. Pisano is also engaged in studying the historical development of nanotechnology and the intellectual frameworks of scientific revolutions.
Key interests include the interplay between scientific theory and practice, the role of mathematics in physics, and the cultural and institutional contexts of scientific advancements. His work often bridges historical analysis with modern pedagogical approaches, emphasizing the integration of history of science in education.
Pisano has authored numerous articles and books on topics ranging from Carnot’s thermodynamics to the Geneva Edition of Newton’s Principia. His contributions highlight the dynamic relationship between physics and mathematics, as well as the evolution of scientific thought from the Renaissance to modern times.
