Raffaela Rettinger is a Research Assistant at the Department of Sinology within the Philosophical Faculty at the University of Würzburg. She holds a BA and MA in Sinology from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), with additional studies in Japan via a PROSA Scholarship at Osaka University. Her research focuses on the sociopolitical role of tattoos in premodern Chinese literature and history, examining themes like individualism, authority, honor, and regionalism through narrative and legal texts. She also specializes in Chinese mythology, intellectual history, and comparative literature between China and Japan.
Academic education includes a semester at Beijing Normal University and advanced studies in Japanese language/culture. She teaches courses such as 'Chinese Heroes' (2021-22) and contributes to the European Chinese Language and Culture Programme. Her work integrates intercultural analysis and late imperial era studies. Awards include the PROSA Scholarship for Japanese Studies.
