Rafael Merinero Rodríguez is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at University of Pablo de Olavide. His academic work focuses on urban regeneration, political sociology, and public policy analysis. He is affiliated with the PTyP (Politics, Territory and Participation) research group and has previously been part of the GUM-Z (Research Group on Urban and Metropolitan Governance) and SPL-UPO (Political Sociology and Local Policies).
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Seville with a thesis titled "Stakeholder Networks in Participatory Tourism Management at the Local Level: The Case of Medium-Sized Cities in Inland Andalusia. Models, Strategies, and Results" (2008), supervised by Dr. Elías Zamora Acosta.
Dr. Merinero Rodríguez's research interests span across several interconnected fields. His primary focus is on urban regeneration policies, particularly examining both substantive and procedural dimensions of these policies in the Spanish context. He also investigates political sociology with emphasis on territorial governance, local participation mechanisms, and stakeholder networks. His work often intersects with European Union urban policy frameworks, especially the URBANA initiative (2007-2013) that implemented urban regeneration programs across Spanish cities. His methodological approach incorporates comparative analysis of local policies using multidimensional analytical models from public policy studies.
His notable publication "Urban Regeneration Policies in Spain. The Substantive and Procedural Dimension. From Policies Content to Governance" (2013) represents a comprehensive comparative analysis of urban regeneration programs across Spain, moving beyond isolated case studies to provide a broader perspective on how these EU-funded initiatives are implemented at the local level.
As a faculty member, he participates in several doctoral programs including Education, Social Change and Cohesion; Democracy and Public Policy; and History and Humanistic Studies: Europe, America, Art and Geography. His PAIDI (Andalusian Plan for Research, Development and Innovation) areas fall under Social and Legal Sciences.
Dr. Merinero Rodríguez has contributed to advancing knowledge in urban governance through his research on how European Union initiatives translate into local urban regeneration practices, with particular attention to the relationship between policy content and governance structures.
