Rafael Fissore is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, within the College of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of fertilization and early embryonic development, particularly calcium signaling dynamics in mammalian eggs.
Research Interests: Dr. Fissore's work centers on understanding how sperm induces Ca²⁺ oscillations in eggs, a critical signal for embryonic activation. His lab investigates the sperm-derived factor responsible for initiating this cascade and studies the regulation and degradation of the IP3 receptor during the cell cycle. They have identified KN-93 as a novel inhibitor of IP3R-1 and are characterizing its mechanism. Techniques used include intracellular Ca²⁺ imaging, in vitro fertilization, ICSI, protein purification, kinase assays, and molecular interventions.
Honors:
- Distinguished Faculty Lecturer (2008)
- Chancellor's Medal (2008)
- CFNR Outstanding Research Award (2002)
Advising and Grants: Dr. Fissore mentors multiple graduate students from the ABBS and MCB programs, as well as undergraduate researchers. While specific grants are not listed, his sustained research program and recognition through major university awards suggest a strong history of external funding in reproductive and developmental sciences.
Laboratory and Team: His laboratory, located in the Integrated Sciences Building, includes graduate students Francesca Carpentiero, Emily M. Lopes, and Nidhi Thaker, along with undergraduate researcher Ridha Alam. The team collaborates across disciplines to unravel fundamental aspects of egg activation and early development.
