Rachel Watson is a Professor of Cutaneous Science at the University of Manchester’s School of Biological Sciences, within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine & Health. She serves as Head of Division for Musculoskeletal Sciences and Deputy Director of the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing (MICRA). Additionally, she chairs St Simon’s Catholic Primary School’s governors and holds editorial roles, including Section Editor of the British Journal of Dermatology. Her research focuses on skin aging mechanisms, extracellular matrix repair, and clinical assessment of therapies like retinoids.
Education: BSc (Anatomy & Cell Biology) and PhD from the University of Sheffield (1989–1997).
Research interests include intrinsic/extrinsic aging, ultraviolet radiation’s impact, and dietary interventions to mitigate skin damage. She collaborates with experts in dermatology, pharmacology, and environmental sciences, emphasizing translational research from lab to clinical trials.
Awards include the British Society for Investigative Dermatology Young Investigator Award (2005) and European Society for Dermatological Research recognition (2019). Her work has led to impacts such as advancing anti-aging cosmetic efficacy testing and understanding skin inflammation resolution.
Supervises PhD students and leads research teams in labs like the Dermatopharmacology Unit (Salford Royal NHS Trust) and Stopford Building labs for gene/protein studies. Active in initiatives like UK-TREND and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
