Rachel M. McCleary is a Lecturer in the Economics Department at Harvard University and a nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. She holds a Ph.D. in moral philosophy from the University of Chicago, alongside a Master of Theological Studies from Emory University and a B.A. from Indiana University. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the political economy of religion, examining how religious beliefs and practices influence economic performance, political institutions, and social behavior across societies. She also explores philosophical questions related to moral agency, consciousness, and reasoning, particularly in the context of canonized child martyrs in the Catholic Church.
Collaborating with Robert J. Barro, her work has been cited in major outlets like Bloomberg. Her research datasets, including studies on saints, private voluntary organizations, and Guatemalan Protestant dynamics, are publicly accessible. McCleary’s contributions bridge economics, sociology, and theology, with recent publications analyzing religious competition, historical martyrdom patterns, and the socioeconomic impact of religious institutions.
