Professor Rachel Goldman is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She holds the rank of Professor and serves as Vice Chair of the Division of Materials Physics (DMP) of the American Physical Society (APS), a role she will assume as Chair in 2021. Her research focuses on materials physics, semiconductor devices, and nanotechnology, with notable contributions to quantum dot engineering, optoelectronics, and energy materials. She leads projects exploring novel semiconductor alloys, heterostructures, and nanoscale materials for applications in LEDs, thermoelectrics, and photonics. Her work integrates experimental and theoretical approaches to address challenges in materials science and device fabrication. Professor Goldman’s team has pioneered techniques to enhance LED efficiency and develop advanced materials for next-generation optoelectronic systems.
Her research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (e.g., MRSEC and ECCS-BSF programs) and other funding bodies. She is a co-author of over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on GaN nanowires, GaAsNBi alloys, and topological insulators. Her leadership roles and editorial contributions reflect her commitment to advancing materials physics and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Professor Goldman’s laboratory at the Randall Laboratory of Physics and Homer A. Neal Lab continues to push boundaries in semiconductor innovation and nanoscale materials engineering.
