Rachel E. Schattman is an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Maine’s School of Food and Agriculture. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Vermont (2016). Her research focuses on agricultural resilience in the face of climate change, with an emphasis on agroecology, participatory action research, and sustainable production systems for vegetables, small fruits, and water use efficiency. She integrates mixed-methods approaches to understand producer decision-making and behavioral dynamics.
Teaching: Dr. Schattman instructs courses such as Sustainable Horticulture and Agriculture Capstone (PSE 430), Sustainable Food Systems (PSE 312), Agroecology and Sustainable Cropping Systems (PSE 360), and Vegetable and Fruit Production (PSE 215).
Research Themes: Her work addresses climate adaptation strategies in specialty crop production, PFAS contamination in agricultural systems, and the socio-behavioral aspects of conservation practices. She collaborates with practitioners to develop tools for natural resource management and assess policy impacts on farming practices.
Publications: Her recent work spans topics like food security dynamics in rural communities, PFAS pollution in compost and crops, and foresters' perceptions of climate adaptation. She emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration to bridge scientific and applied knowledge gaps.
Labs/Teams: Her research is facilitated through the Agroecology Lab (http://agroecolab.com/), which engages in field trials, stakeholder workshops, and community-based projects.
