Dr. Rachel C Barrowman is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow's School of Humanities. A leading figure in Scottish archaeological research, her career spans over three decades, with a focus on medieval and post-medieval sites across the Scottish Isles. She holds a PhD in Archaeology (2022) and has led excavations at iconic locations such as Dùn Èistean in Lewis and St. Ninian’s Isle in Shetland. Her research emphasizes island archaeology, chapel-sites, and the interplay between local and regional cultural dynamics.
Her work includes co-editing seminal volumes like The Viking Age in Scotland (2022) and The Birsay Bay Project (2021). She has conducted extensive surveys of coastal chapel-sites in Lewis and Shetland, blending fieldwork with historical analysis. Notable projects include the Lewis Coastal Chapel-Sites Survey and excavations at Tintagel Castle in Cornwall.
Barrowman’s publications span book reviews, monographs, and peer-reviewed articles, addressing topics such as clan strongholds (Dùn Èistean), maritime networks, and the archaeology of religious sites. Her recent work (2020–2023) focuses on synthesizing field data to inform broader cultural narratives, while her 2024 review of Eilean Donan Castle underscores her engagement with highland archaeological discourse.
She currently advises archaeologists on publication strategies, ensuring rigorous documentation of fieldwork. Her research bridges academic rigor with public heritage engagement, particularly through collaborative projects in remote Scottish regions.
