Dr. Rachel Brouwer is an Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and the Amsterdam Neuroscience research institute. She holds dual appointments in the Department of Complex Trait Genetics and the Complex Trait Genetics group within Amsterdam Neuroscience. Her research focuses on neurogenetics, psychiatric disorders, and developmental neuroscience. Key areas include schizophrenia risk mechanisms, brain structural genetics, and social cognitive development in pre-adolescence.
Her work integrates genomic analysis with neuroimaging techniques (e.g., MRI, DTI) to explore genetic influences on brain morphology and mental health. Notable contributions include studies on immune-neurodevelopmental interactions in schizophrenia and ancestry-specific polygenic scoring for brain volume traits. Dr. Brouwer has supervised eight PhD theses and teaches courses such as 'Nature versus Nurture' and 'Statistics in Neurosciences.'
Recent publications highlight her expertise in genetic overlap studies linking height and schizophrenia risk, sex differences in social competence, and cortical thinning in schizophrenia. Collaborations span international consortia including CIBERSAM and ENIGMA.
