Rachael Brown is an Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Philosophy of the Sciences at The Australian National University (ANU). She holds a PhD in Philosophy from ANU, alongside a BSc from the University of Melbourne and a BA(Hons) in Arts. Her research bridges philosophy of biology, cognitive science, and general philosophy of science, focusing on evolutionary cognition, Evo-devo's relationship with the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis, and model-based reasoning in biology.
Her work addresses methodological challenges in studying animal behavior and cognition, including debates around adaptationism and structuralism. She leads the ANU Futures Scheme project (2018–2025) and actively supervises research students. Key themes in her publications include evolvability, causal knowledge frameworks, cognitive archaeology, and evolutionary mechanisms.
Brown’s research outputs span interdisciplinary topics, blending theoretical philosophy with empirical biological inquiry. She contributes to discussions on behavioral innovation, evolutionary theory, and the integration of archaeological evidence with cognitive evolution studies.
