Dr. R.J. Knight is a Lecturer in American History and Schools Liaison Officer at the University of Sheffield's School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. His research focuses on enslaved women's experiences, motherhood under slavery, and the roles of white women in perpetuating racial hierarchies in the Antebellum South. He holds a PhD from the University of Reading, where he also completed his MA and BA, including a semester at the University of Mississippi.
His work examines the intersections of gender, race, and labor within slaveholding households, particularly through case studies of infant-feeding practices and maternal labor. Knight has received grants from the British Library Eccles Centre, British Association for American Studies, and others. He currently supervises PhD students researching topics like Sheffield's slavery legacies and early modern manhood.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on American history, Trumpism, and family history, as well as postgraduate modules on women and slavery. He contributes to the Slavery Research Hub and collaborates internationally on projects like the 'Mothering Slaves' network.
