R. David Lankes is the Virginia & Charles Bowden Professor of Librarianship at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Information. He combines theory and practice to create transformative research projects funded by organizations like The MacArthur Foundation, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Department of Defense. His work focuses on redefining librarianship as a catalyst for community empowerment and democratic values.

Scientific accolades include the 2021 ALA Mudge Award, 2016 Ken Haycock Award, and 2012 ABC-CLIO/Greenwood Award for his seminal book The Atlas of New Librarianship. His 2025 book Triptych: Death, AI, and Librarianship expands this vision through a partnership with Library Journal.
