R. Andrew Swartz serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering department at Michigan Technological University's College of Engineering, with an additional appointment as Affiliated Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Dr. Swartz develops computationally efficient embedded algorithms for autonomous monitoring of civil infrastructure assets including buildings, bridges, pipelines, and wind turbines. His research integrates structural dynamics, wireless sensor technologies, and signal processing to enable real-time structural health assessment and occupant protection through novel sensor systems.
He teaches specialized courses in steel design, structural timber design, continuous-system modeling, and advanced structural analysis, applying his expertise in infrastructure protection to engineering education.
