Qiumin Tan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. She holds the Canada Research Chair Tier II in Molecular Genetics of Human Disease and leads the Tan Lab, focusing on hippocampal development and function. Her research investigates neuronal generation, survival, and integration in the hippocampus, with implications for epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Ph.D., Washington State University
Her research interests center on the molecular mechanisms governing hippocampal neurogenesis, particularly during early postnatal and adult stages. She studies how neuronal migration, dendritic development, and cell death are regulated, using the dentate gyrus as a model. A significant focus is on Cajal-Retzius cells and their developmental demise, as well as the role of the CIC gene in neurodevelopmental conditions. Her lab employs mouse models and genetic manipulation to dissect these pathways.
The analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on transcriptional regulation in neurological and immunological contexts, particularly involving the CIC and ATXN1 genes. Her work bridges neuroscience, genetics, and developmental biology, with strong translational potential for rare diseases. Themes include neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegeneration, immune cell regulation, and gene expression control.
Scientific awards include:
- Canada Research Chair Tier II in Molecular Genetics of Human Disease
Dr. Tan advises graduate students and leads a research team including technicians and trainees. Her lab receives funding through competitive grants, including the Canada Research Chair program. She is actively involved in community outreach, particularly through the CIC Gene Portal for patients and families, translating complex research for public understanding. Her collaborations span multiple institutions, with frequent co-authorship with experts like H.Y. Zoghbi and J. Park.
The Tan Lab includes graduate students and technicians working on hippocampal development, neuronal maturation, and CIC-related disorders. The lab maintains a strong public-facing presence to connect science with patient communities and promote awareness of rare neurogenetic conditions.
