Qin (Tim) Sheng is a Professor of Mathematics at Baylor University, Department of Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge (1990) and has held faculty positions at National University of Singapore, University of Louisiana, and University of Dayton before joining Baylor in 2005. His research focuses on applied and computational mathematics, including splitting and adaptive methods for singular PDEs, financial mathematics, and machine learning algorithm design. He has been an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Computer Mathematics since 2010.
Dr. Sheng has received notable awards such as the J. T. Knight Prize (1987), Lundgren Research Award (1989), and Ky and Y. Fan Award (2017). His work includes cross-disciplinary collaborations in scientific and engineering computations, supported by NSF and Simons Foundation grants. He actively participates in editorial roles and organizes conferences like the One World Seminar on Mathematics of Machine Learning and the Joint Mathematics Meeting (JMM’25).
Teaching interests span from calculus to advanced graduate courses, including numerical analysis, computational finance, and finite difference methods. He advises doctoral candidates and has directed numerous M.S. theses and undergraduate research projects.
