Qianlai Zhuang

Qianlai Zhuang is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences and Agronomy at Purdue University, holding the William F. and Patty J. Miller Professorship. He leads the Geodata Science Initiative and directs the MS Program in Geodata Science for Professionals. His research focuses on climate change interactions, biogeochemical cycles, and policy impacts. He holds affiliations with the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future and the Laboratory of Ecosystems and Biogeochemical Dynamics.

Education: Ph.D. in Biology and Wildlife from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1997). Professional experience includes roles as Post-Doctoral Scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory (2001–2005) and faculty positions at Purdue since 2005, progressing from Assistant to Full Professor.

Research Interests: Modeling carbon and methane exchanges between ecosystems and the atmosphere, consequences of climate change on permafrost dynamics, and ozone impacts on ecosystems. He integrates process-based models with satellite and field data to study Arctic, boreal, and tropical ecosystems.

Awards include multi-million-dollar grants from NASA, NSF, DOE, and USGS for projects on methane budgets, permafrost degradation, and boreal wildfires. His work spans over 200 peer-reviewed publications, including high-impact studies on Arctic carbon dynamics and global methane emissions.

Advising: Supervised over 30 doctoral students and postdocs, many now in academia and industry. Current research focuses on AI-driven modeling of soil moisture and methane emissions, leveraging hybrid physics and machine learning.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Laboratory of Ecosystems and Biogeochemical Dynamics and collaborates with institutions globally, including MIT and the Marine Biological Laboratory.
