Professor Qasim Ayub is a faculty member at Monash University Malaysia, leading the Genomics Facility and conducting research in evolutionary and disease genomics. He holds a medical degree from Khyber Medical College (Pakistan) and a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas, USA. His work focuses on population genomics, conservation genomics, and high-altitude adaptation. Previously, he contributed to the 1000 Genomes Project and gorilla sequencing at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
Research interests include human and non-human population genomics, microbial communities, antibiotic resistance, and conservation efforts for endangered species like the Malayan Tiger and Helmeted hornbills. He leads projects such as the Malaysian BioGenome Project, collaborating globally on genomics and microbiome studies. Awards include the President of Pakistan’s Medal of Excellence (2006) for forensic DNA markers and a Gold Medal for teaching innovation (2022).
Teaching commitments include courses in Genomics and Population Genetics and Bioinformatics. Active in collaborative projects across Malaysia, Pakistan, and international institutions, his work addresses SDGs related to health and biodiversity conservation.
