Päivi Majaranta is a Senior Lecturer at Tampere University, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Department of Computing Sciences. She is actively engaged in teaching and research within the field of human-technology interaction.
Research Focus: Her work spans gaze-based human-computer interaction, human augmentation, eye-controlled interfaces, and animal-computer interaction (particularly with dogs). She has pioneered applications of eye tracking in accessibility and usability research.
Academic Leadership: Majaranta has held numerous positions of trust, including leadership roles in international workshops (ACM ETRA, PETMEI, COGAIN Association) and advisory boards (Eyes4ICU Doctoral Network). She contributes to editorial boards like the Journal of Eye Movement Research.
Research Projects: Currently involved in the AWE - Augmented Wearable Computing project and the Speechreading project "Katse huulioon?" in collaboration with the University of Oulu. She leads the Visual Interaction Research Group (VIRG) and contributes to curriculum development in the Master’s Programme in Human-Technology Interaction.
Teaching Contributions: Offers courses on usability/user experience evaluation methods and user interface design principles. Acts as a thesis supervisor for Master's students in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering.
Recent Publications Trends: Recent work focuses on eye-tracking applications in accessibility, gaze interaction with haptic feedback, and animal-computer interaction through canine activity monitoring with wearable sensors. Her research combines technical innovation with deep understanding of human and animal behavior.
