Puttur Prasad

Puttur Prasad is a Professor at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), with primary appointments in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a secondary appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a key member of the Pre-Clerkship medical education faculty, serving as Component Director for Medical Biochemistry & Genetics and Module Director for Foundations of Medicine (MEDI-6120), and as a facilitator in Case-Based Learning.

His research focuses on the discovery and characterization of nutrient transporters, aiming to understand their physiological roles in nutrient delivery and to develop strategies for using these transporters in drug delivery and cancer chemoprevention. His work bridges molecular biology, immunology, and translational medicine, particularly in gastrointestinal inflammation, cancer stem cells, and autoimmune regulation.

His recent publications (2021–2023) reflect a strong trend in molecular immunology and cancer biology, with emphasis on transcription factors (RXRα, ATF4), Wnt signaling, macrophage and dendritic cell function, and colorectal cancer mechanisms. Several studies explore the interplay between gut microbiota and systemic inflammation, indicating a systems-level approach to disease pathogenesis.

Dr. Prasad has received extramural funding from NIH and HRSA, supporting his research and educational initiatives. He is also engaged in professional service as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Oncology and Editor for Aquifer Sciences, and has served as a reviewer for journals and grant proposals.

He contributes to institutional life as Faculty Advisor for the American Red Cross Club and facilitator for MCG Revisit Days. His work integrates research, teaching, and service, positioning him as a central figure in both basic science and medical education at MCG.
