Pulickel M. Ajayan serves as the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering and Department Chair at Rice University. He holds professorships in the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Department of Chemistry.
His research focuses on advanced nanomaterials with applications spanning alternative energy, multifunctional nanocomposites, and electronics/sensor technologies. Dr. Ajayan's work addresses critical areas including energy generation and storage, chemical sensors, nanoelectronics, flexible displays, high performance composites, membrane technologies, coatings, and biomedical applications.
His recent publications demonstrate strong trends in 2D materials development, energy storage innovations, sustainable battery recycling, and advanced thin film technologies. The research shows particular emphasis on practical applications for energy efficiency, next-generation electronics, and environmental sustainability.
Dr. Ajayan leads the Nanomaterials Laboratory at Rice University, where he directs a multi-disciplinary team effort focused on developing functional nanomaterials for diverse applications. The laboratory maintains numerous collaborations both within Rice University and with external institutions to advance materials science and engineering.
