Prudence L. Carter is the Sarah and Joseph Jr. Dowling Professor of Sociology at Brown University and Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America. Previously, she served as the E.H. and Mary E. Pardee Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley (2016-2021).
Her research examines structural inequalities in education and society, with emphasis on how race, ethnicity, class, and gender shape academic and mobility outcomes in the United States and globally. She employs mixed-method approaches to analyze racial dynamics in schools and societal systems.
