Dr. Prentiss Dantzler is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments at the School of Cities, Infrastructure Institute, Centre for Global Social Policy, and the Graduate Department of Geography and Planning. He joined UofT in 2021, after faculty roles at Georgia State University (Urban Studies) and Colorado College (Sociology). His research intersects urban poverty, neighborhood change, racial capitalism, and housing policy, focusing on racial exclusion and community responses to urban inequality.
- Education: Ph.D. in Public Affairs (Community Development), Rutgers University-Camden; M.P.A. in Urban and Regional Planning and GIS, West Chester University; B.S. in Energy, Business and Finance, Penn State University.
Dr. Dantzler’s research includes three major projects: (1) analyzing housing affordability and neighborhood change in Toronto using administrative data and tenant interviews; (2) examining homeowners’ associations (HOAs) as mechanisms of residential segregation; (3) advancing racial capitalism as a framework to critique urban theory. His Google Scholar publications highlight trends in urban sociology, housing policy, and critical race theory, with recent works extending these themes to suburban and non-core urban contexts.
Professional Roles: Deputy Editor for City and Community, editorial board member for Journal of Urban Affairs, and Treasurer for both the Community and Urban Sociology Section (American Sociological Association) and the Urban Affairs Association.
