Prof. Dr. Pol Besenius is a Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry (W3) at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. His research focuses on the design and synthesis of organic and supramolecular functional systems, particularly supramolecular polymers in water, multidomain peptide biomaterials, and metalloamphiphiles. He is Vice Spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC1066) and Research Training Group (RTG 2516), and Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry.
- Education:
- PhD in Chemistry (2004-2008) – WestCHEM, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
- BSc with Honours in Chemistry (2003-2004) – University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
- Diplomprüfung in Chemistry (2000-2003) – Vienna University of Technology
His research spans supramolecular self-assembly for biosynthetic materials, with applications in immunotherapy, 3D bioprinting, and stimuli-responsive hydrogels. He utilizes natural and non-natural supramolecular interactions to develop temperature-, pH-, and ROS-responsive systems for biomedical carriers and vaccines. Recent publications highlight innovations in Cucurbit[8]uril-mediated hydrogels and glycopeptide vaccines for dendritic cell targeting.
Scientific Awards & Honors include

- Thieme Chemistry Journal Award (2013)
- Liebig-Fellow (2011-2014)
- Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow (2009-2011)
He has advised numerous PhD students (e.g., Jessica Erlenbusch, Nicole Hutter) and leads projects like SUPRAVACC, an ERC-funded initiative for synthetic vaccines. Collaborations include institutions such as the Max Planck Graduate Center and State Key Laboratory, Fudan University.
