Plamen P. Angelov

Professor Plamen Angelov holds a Personal Chair in Intelligent Systems at Lancaster University's School of Computing and Communications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, ELLIS, IET, AAIA, and HEA, and served as Vice President of the International Neural Networks Society (INNS) from 2017-2020 while serving on IEEE SMC Society's Board of Governors.

A globally recognized AI leader ranked in the top 0.2% worldwide (731st out of 399,066 researchers), his pioneering work focuses on explainable AI, interpretable machine learning systems, and knowledge extraction from evolving data streams. He developed foundational frameworks for evolving intelligent systems and neural network applications.

• 2020 Dennis Gabor award for outstanding contributions to engineering applications of neural networks

He directs major research initiatives including multi-million-pound projects funded by UK Research Councils, European Commission, European Space Agency, DSTL, and GCHQ. As founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Springer's Evolving Systems journal (recipient of 2020/2024 Editorial Excellence Awards), he has organized over 30 IEEE conferences and delivered 30+ keynote speeches at premier venues including CVPR and NeurIPS. His leadership extends to chairing the IEEE XAI standardization working group (IEEE2976WG) and founding the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Evolving Intelligent Systems.
