Pim Oomen, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He leads the BEAT Lab, affiliated with the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Cardiovascular Innovation and Research Center, the Center for Complex Biological Systems, and the graduate program in Mathematical, Computational & Systems Biology. His research focuses on developing multiscale computational and experimental tools to study cardiac biomechanics, electrophysiology, and remodeling, with a goal to improve cardiovascular therapies and address health disparities. The lab collaborates closely with clinicians to ensure patient-centered outcomes.
Dr. Oomen’s research interests include sex differences in heart failure, patient-specific modeling for Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT), and fostering diversity in biomedical engineering. His work integrates machine learning with cardiac imaging (e.g., MRI) to predict treatment responses and optimize CRT strategies. The lab is also pioneering noninvasive techniques like ultrasound pacing for CRT screening and electrical mapping.
Dr. Oomen’s recent publications emphasize machine learning applications in ECG and MRI data to predict CRT outcomes, sex-based disparities in CRT response, and novel biomarkers for cardiac remodeling. His team’s interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, biology, and clinical practice to advance personalized medicine in cardiology.
Lab members are housed in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB), with offices in Rooms 6550 (lab), 6330 (student offices), and 6084 (Dr. Oomen’s office). Contact: pim.oomen@uci.edu.
