He has been a faculty member since 1993, progressing from researcher to associate professor before becoming a full professor in 2016. His academic work is deeply rooted in Mediterranean archaeology, with a focus on the Aegean and Sicily. He conducts extensive fieldwork in Crete, particularly at Phaistos and Haghia Triada, and co-directs excavations in various Sicilian sites including Calicantone, Calaforno, and Pantalica.
His research interests span a broad spectrum of archaeological themes: Aegean archaeology (especially Minoan Crete), prehistoric and protohistoric Sicily, palatial administration, writing systems such as Linear A, textile production, sumptuary arts, and the intercultural dynamics between the Aegean and Central Mediterranean. He also explores public archaeology, historiography of archaeological research, and digital documentation methods. The trends in his recent publications reveal a sustained focus on material culture analysis, landscape archaeology, and digital methodologies. His work frequently examines the connections between Sicily and Crete during the Bronze Age, investigates palatial economies and administrative systems, and applies advanced techniques such as 3D surveying and digital modeling to preserve and interpret archaeological sites. He also contributes to academic discourse through book reviews and editorial work.
Militello is actively involved in academic mentoring and thesis supervision, encouraging students to engage in bibliographic and field research. He has organized several archaeological exhibitions, such as 'Magia d’Egitto' and 'Nell’Isola di Dedalo,' promoting public engagement with cultural heritage. His collaborative work with scholars across Europe underscores his role in international archaeological networks. Militello’s contributions are documented in over 160 publications, including monographs, edited volumes, and articles in high-ranking journals, establishing him as a leading figure in Mediterranean archaeology.
