Pieter 't Hoen, professionally known as Piet Paris, serves as a permanent faculty member and Tutor in the Textile and Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). With over three decades of experience as an internationally renowned fashion illustrator, he has contributed to publications including Vogue Japan, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and Dutch newspapers like Het Parool and De Telegraaf. At KABK, he teaches Design Drawing across all four years of the Bachelor Textile and Fashion program, emphasizing hand-drawn techniques in the design process.
Education:
- Fashion Studies, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem (now Artez), 1982-1988
His research centers on fashion illustration as an interpretive art form that transcends photography by capturing atmospheric essence through manual techniques. He champions traditional pencil-based drawing and cut-and-paste methods, rejecting digital tools to maintain tactile authenticity. His work explores historical influences from classical painting—particularly clothing depictions in the Rijksmuseum—and advocates for anti-popular artistic choices, observational rigor, and engagement with global visual cultures like Japan's drawing-centric fashion media.
As an educator, he mentors students through the translation of abstract design concepts into tangible drawings, facilitating critical discussions about color theory, materiality, and modeling. He observes student development across the full degree program while emphasizing museum immersion and unconventional creative approaches. The Textile and Fashion Department provides a studio environment with weaving machines and workshops where he conducts hands-on instruction.
