Dr. Pieter Wagenaar is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Political Science and Public Administration department. He also holds roles in the New Public Governance (NPG) research group and serves as Secretary of the Sectorbestuur WO&O for the AOb trade union in Utrecht. His academic journey includes a PhD in History from Leiden University (defended 1997) and studies in document management at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on the history of public administration, informatization of governance, and heritage studies, with notable contributions to participatory governance frameworks in heritage sectors. He co-edited the 2023 volume Calling on the Community and participates in the EU-funded Heriland project.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on policy-making, administrative governance, and academic writing in public administration. He has supervised three PhD theses and contributed editorial work to journals like Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis. His research has addressed topics such as heritage custodianship, bureaucratic evolution in the Dutch Republic, and digital identity governance.
Notable collaborations include the NWO-funded Under Construction project (2006) and academic partnerships across European institutions. His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to cultural preservation and inclusive societies.
