Pieter Jan Haas is an Assistant Professor in the medical field at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Strategic Program on Infection & Immunity. His research focuses on bacteriophage interactions with bacterial and human hosts, particularly for therapeutic applications.
His primary research interests include bacteriophage therapy, infectious diseases, medical microbiology, immunology, virology, and mycology. He aims to understand the fundamental processes of bacteriophage-host interactions to develop effective phage-based treatments for bacterial infections, with emphasis on bacterial resistance mechanisms and immune responses.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on infectious disease diagnostics in tropical settings and for fungal pathogens. The 2024 publication on histoplasmosis diagnosis in HIV/AIDS patients in Suriname reflects his commitment to improving diagnostic methodologies for neglected tropical diseases through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Haas leads the Bacteriophages and phage therapy research group within the Infection & Immunity strategic program. This group integrates microbiology, immunology, and clinical research to advance phage therapy applications, particularly for antibiotic-resistant infections and complex host-pathogen interactions.
