Pieter Cullis

Pieter Cullis is a Professor at the University of British Columbia's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine. He directs the Nanomedicine Research Group from the Life Sciences Centre office 5451.

His research focuses on membrane structure/function relationships and therapeutic applications of lipid nanoparticles (LN). Key areas include:

• LN delivery systems for siRNA and genetic drugs
• Immunostimulatory drug delivery for cancer therapy
• Chemotherapeutic encapsulation for tumor-targeted delivery

His work has led to clinical-stage liposomal formulations including a doxorubicin treatment currently in advanced trials.

Publications demonstrate consistent focus on lipid nanoparticle evolution, with recent advancements in mRNA transfection potency and in vivo CAR T cell engineering. Research trends show progression from fundamental lipid design to clinical translation of nucleic acid therapeutics.
