Piet Lens

Prof. Piet Lens is a leading academic in environmental biotechnology, specializing in anaerobic wastewater treatment, biofilm engineering, and circular bioeconomy strategies. He initiated the Erasmus Mundus programs IMETE, HEMEP, and ETECOS3, fostering global research collaboration. As founding Editor-in-Chief of ReViews in Environmental Science and Bio/Technology, he promotes interdisciplinary research. His work focuses on converting waste into valuable products like biogas, biofuels, and biocommodities, addressing environmental challenges through innovative bioreactor designs and resource recovery processes.

Research emphasizes sulfur and selenium biotechnology, metal speciation, and anaerobic microbial pathways. He has pioneered algal-bacterial granules and floating treatment wetlands for sustainable water management.
