Pierre-Yves Bochud is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne (UNIL), and Head of the Medical Isolation Unit within the Infectious Diseases Department at CHUV. His work bridges clinical practice and academic research, focusing on the genetic basis of susceptibility to severe infections.
His research interests lie at the intersection of immunology, genetics, and infectious diseases. He investigates how genetic polymorphisms influence immune responses to pathogens such as hepatitis C virus, cytomegalovirus, and invasive fungi like Aspergillus. His work has pioneered risk stratification models based on genetic profiling to guide preventive antimicrobial therapy.
The recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding genetic factors in herpes simplex encephalitis, COVID-19 outcomes, and optimizing antibiotic use. These works reflect a consistent theme: leveraging human genetics to personalize infection prevention and treatment.
- Leenaards Scholarship for Young Academics
- Leenaards Prize (awarded since 2008)
- Leenaards Prize (awarded since 2013)
Dr. Bochud mentors within the academic and clinical environment at UNIL and CHUV. He is deeply involved in major scientific networks including the Fungal Infections Network of Switzerland (FUNGINOS) and Swiss cohort studies on transplantation, hepatitis C, and HIV. He has established a specialized registry and biobank at CHUV to support ongoing and future research. His work is supported by academic and clinical grants, particularly through collaborations with national and international research consortia.
He leads the Medical Isolation Unit at CHUV, which cares for highly immunocompromised patients, and integrates clinical observations into his research program. His team focuses on translating genetic findings into clinical applications for infection risk prediction and targeted prophylaxis.
