Pierre-Luc Bacon is an Associate Professor at Université de Montréal’s Department of Computer Science and Operations Research (DIRO) within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is a core academic member of Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute and IVADO, and holds a Canada-CIFAR AI Chair. His research focuses on reinforcement learning (RL) and optimal control, particularly addressing the 'curse of horizon' challenges in long-term decision-making processes. He leads a team exploring advanced RL techniques for applications in robotics, molecular design, and sustainable energy systems.
Education: PhD in Computer Science (presumed, based on role). His work spans theoretical foundations of RL and practical applications in generative AI, policy optimization, and scalable algorithms. He has supervised over 20 graduate students and postdocs, notable advisees including Mahan Fathi, Evgenii Nikishin, and Pierluca D'Oro.
Research interests include robust RL, entropy regularization, meta-learning, and interdisciplinary applications like molecule generation via GFlowNets. Awards include the Facebook-CIFAR Chair and contributions to projects funded by CRSNG and IVADO. Key grants include a 2023-2029 CRSNG grant on 'Decision Awareness in Learning for Control' (CAD 400k+).
Publications highlight innovations in sparse networks, robust policy gradients, and AI-driven exploration. His labs collaborate with institutions like Polytechnique Montréal and industry partners. Future work emphasizes scaling RL to real-world complexities and ethical AI applications.
