Pierre LE CANN

Pierre LE CANN serves as Professor at the French School of Public Health (EHESP), where he has led environmental health microbiology research and teaching since 2008. He directs the Microbiology Unit at the Laboratory for Study and Research in Environment and Health (LERES) and holds research positions at INSERM Unit U1085 IRSET. Since 2020, he acts as Scientific Advisor for the Inter-regional Health Research, Evaluation and Expertise System (DIREES), with prior leadership as Director of EHESP's Department of Health, Environment, Work and Sanitary Engineering (2017-2019).

Research expertise spans environmental health microbiology with emphasis on biological agent exposure assessment in water/air systems, legionella transmission dynamics in water networks, and molecular detection of indoor air contaminants (molds, allergens, bacteria) linked to respiratory pathologies. His work integrates environmental microbiome analysis and molecular tool development for residential exposure studies.

Professional experience includes Research Manager roles at Ifremer (1998-2007) and Research Engineer positions at AFSSA (1996-1998), complemented by postdoctoral work at University of Southern California (1994-1995). He serves as expert for France's National Institute for Risks and Security and the French Standardization Agency's Bioaerosols technical group.

As an educator, he teaches environmental health microbiology for EHESP's engineering and master's programs, focusing on sanitary microbiology applications in public health practice.
