Pierre Buekens is the W.H. Watkins Professor and Director of the Tulane Center for Emerging Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology (CERPE) at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He holds adjunct professorships at Tulane School of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Baylor College of Medicine (Pediatrics - Tropical Medicine). His education includes a PhD, MD, and MPH from the Free University of Brussels.
Dr. Buekens specializes in reproductive and perinatal epidemiology, with a focus on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) during pregnancy. His research spans Chagas disease in Argentina, syphilis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia, and Zika virus in Honduras. He co-founded Trop-G, a collaboration to control NTDs in Gulf of Mexico regions.
His recent publications emphasize vaccine safety in pregnancy (e.g., Chikungunya, Lassa fever, COVID-19), congenital infections, and epidemiological methods. He has received the Mentoring Award from SPER (2018), an Honorary Degree from Anton de Kom University of Suriname (2010), and is a Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium.
Dr. Buekens contributes to global health initiatives, including active safety surveillance systems for maternal vaccines in low- and middle-income countries. His work bridges clinical practice, public health policy, and translational research in maternal-child health.
