Pierpaolo Battigalli is a Full Professor of Microeconomic Theory and Game Theory at the Department of Decision Sciences, Bocconi University. He serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of Economic Theory and has held leadership roles including Director of the PhD program in Economics, Dean of the PhD School, and Head of the Department of Decision Sciences. His research focuses on the epistemic, psychological, and learning foundations of game theory, with contributions to equilibrium concepts like self-confirming equilibrium and rationalizability in sequential games. He holds prestigious fellowships from the Econometric Society, Game Theory Society, and is a Socio Corrispondente of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
Battigalli earned a Laurea in Economics and Social Sciences from Bocconi (1987) and a PhD in Economics from Bocconi’s joint program (1992). His teaching emphasizes rigorous mathematical foundations alongside critical analysis of game theory, incorporating non-standard concepts such as belief-dependent utility. He has conducted theory-driven experiments on emotional responses in games like the Ultimatum Game and explores behavioral equivalence in extensive form games.
His work bridges abstract theory and applied models, addressing topics like ambiguity aversion, network games, and strategic learning. He collaborates with institutions and researchers globally, contributing to journals such as Games and Economic Behavior and Econometrica. His research also extends to interdisciplinary cooperation mechanisms in interfirm relations.
