Piero Pianetta is a Research Professor at Stanford University, affiliated with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research focuses on understanding semiconductor interfaces and developing advanced analytical tools using synchrotron radiation. He specializes in studying atomic and electronic structures of materials, particularly in the context of energy storage technologies like batteries. Pianetta holds leadership roles at SLAC, including Deputy Chief Research Officer and former Chair of the Photon Science Directorate.
Education: PhD (1977), MS (1973) in Applied Physics from Stanford University; BS (1971) in Physics from Santa Clara University.
Research emphasizes battery cathode degradation mechanisms, nanoscale imaging techniques, and synchrotron-based spectroscopy. Notable contributions include developing high-resolution X-ray spectromicroscopy and elucidating chemomechanical interactions in energy materials. He has authored over 470 publications and holds patents on photocathode technologies. Students under his advisement are engaged in postdoctoral and doctoral research in photon science and materials engineering.
