Piero Manfredi is a Professor of Demography at the University of Pisa, affiliated with the Department of Economics and Management. His research focuses on infectious disease dynamics, behavioral epidemiology, and sustainability economics. He has led prominent projects such as the ECDC-funded 'Vaccine preventable disease modelling in the European Union' and the ERC-funded DECIDE project. His work bridges epidemiological modeling with public health policy, emphasizing vaccination strategies and pandemic preparedness. He has contributed to Italy’s national measles elimination plan and collaborated on global initiatives like the EU’s FLUMODCONT and POLYMOD projects.
His research interests include the interplay between demographic changes and disease transmission, particularly in low-income settings, and the socio-economic dimensions of sustainability transitions. He has extensively studied herd immunity, vaccine hesitancy, and the impact of behavioral responses on epidemic control. His recent work explores renewable energy diffusion and the economic implications of public health interventions.
Key projects include coordinating the DECIDE project (2012–2017), modeling social distancing strategies for pandemic preparedness, and analyzing vaccination policies in Europe. His contributions to behavioral epidemiology with A. d’Onofrio have advanced understanding of population dynamics in disease control.
Dr. Manfredi’s publications address pandemic preparedness, innovation diffusion, and the socio-economic costs of epidemics. He advises on public health policy and has authored influential papers on topics ranging from herpes zoster epidemiology to the automation risks of Industry 4.0.
