Piera Bello

Piera Bello is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Bergamo. She holds a PhD in Economics from the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI). She previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University College London (UCL) and the University of Zurich. Her research focuses on gender and education economics, household finance, and the societal impacts of stereotypes. She also explores female under-representation in academia and the determinants of gender discrimination in various contexts.

Her key expertise includes gender discrimination, stereotypes, similarity bias, natural language processing, annuity markets, and population ageing. Recent work examines gender price discrimination in annuities (Chilean evidence) and the link between education and excess mortality during the pandemic.

Bello’s publications appear in leading journals like Journal of Public Economics and European Economic Review. She investigates cross-border commuting dynamics and the effects of gender quotas on political quality. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges economics with social policy and demographic studies.
