Prof Pier Luigi Vidale is a Professor of Climate System Science at the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology, part of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He also serves as a Senior Scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS-Climate), leading the High-Resolution Climate Modelling (HRCM) research program and the Land Surface Processes group. His work focuses on high-resolution climate modeling, land-atmosphere interactions, and extreme weather events like tropical cyclones and heatwaves.
Key Roles:
- Chair of Climate System Science at the University of Reading
- Scientific Coordinator of the EU Horizon 2020 PRIMAVERA project
- Co-Principal Investigator in the Joint Weather and Climate Research Programme (JWCRP)
- Director of the NCAS Climate Modelling Summer School
Research Interests: Advanced climate modeling techniques, tropical cyclone dynamics, climate extremes, and land-surface processes. He develops high-resolution global climate models (e.g., HadGEM3-GA7.1) to study regional climate variability and extreme events.
Projects & Leadership:
- Leading the HRCM program under the JWCRP
- Contributing to the HighResMIP and PRIMAVERA initiatives
- Collaborating with the Met Office on model development and climate projections
Advising & Education: Supervises PhD students researching tropical cyclones and climate modeling. Teaches at the NCAS Summer School, focusing on climate model development and applications.
Labs & Teams: Leads the JULES land surface model development and collaborates internationally on projects like the UPSCALE campaign and DYAMOND.
