Pier Francesco Ghetti (born 1943) is an Italian ecologist and hydrobiologist. He served as Rector of Ca' Foscari University of Venice from 2003 to 2009. As a Full Professor of Ecology, he taught at the Department of Environmental Sciences, specializing in Ecology, Applied Ecology, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Freshwater Ecology. He led the Department of Environmental Sciences (1992–1996), was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences (1996–2001), and Rector (2003–2009). During his Rectorship, he oversaw major infrastructure projects, including the restoration of Ca' Foscari’s main campus, expansion of the Economics faculty building, and development of the Science faculty in Mestre. He prioritized student services, internationalization (e.g., Ca’ Foscari-Harvard Summer School), accessibility (e.g., ‘Ca’ Foscari Accessibile’), and research enhancement via fund-raising and the ‘Anagrafe della ricerca’ database.
His academic contributions include over 200 scientific works and 30 monographs, notably winning the Gambrinus Mazzotti Prize (1993) for river conservation, the Environment Teaching Prize (1986), and the AcquAmbiente 1998 Scientific Prize. He strengthened Ca’ Foscari’s international partnerships, including agreements with Romanian cultural institutes, Harvard University, and Armenia’s Yerevan State University. He also championed historical preservation, establishing the University Archive Room and archiving institutional documents.
