Ragni Piene is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. She has held this position since 1987, preceded by an Associate Professorship from 1979 to 1986. Her research focuses on algebraic geometry, including enumerative geometry, singularity theory, moduli spaces, and applications to computer-aided geometric design. She has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions such as MIT, MSRI, and École Normale Supérieure.
Education: PhD in Mathematics from MIT (1976), M.Sc. from University of Oslo (1972), and D.E.A. from Université de Paris (1970). Her academic leadership roles include Chair of the Abel Committee (2010–2014) and membership in the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and a member of several distinguished academies, including the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
Her research interests span algebraic geometry with a focus on geometric structures like toric varieties, Hilbert schemes, and real algebraic curves. Recent publications explore topics such as polypols, evolute curves, and toric duality, reflecting her contributions to both theoretical and applied aspects of geometry.
Awards and honors include recognition for her leadership in mathematics and her scholarly contributions, including the Abel Committee chairmanship and membership in Academia Europaea. She has advised numerous projects and serves on editorial boards and scientific committees globally.
